According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), university still remains the most popular route, with more than half a million students starting a bachelor’s degree during the academic year 2017/18. In 2018/19, the apprenticeship starts target in Scotland increased to 28,000 – in keeping with the Scottish Government’s commitment to increase apprenticeship starts to 30,000 by the end of 2020. Although this figure is still low in comparison to traditional university students, it is a 32% increase on the previous academic year, proving that more people are becoming aware of the benefits a Modern Apprenticeship can offer.
